GUIDE 06 OF 27

How long should a podcast be?

What the data says about episode length across tens of thousands of shows and by genre, and how to pick the right length for yours.

Updated

There is no correct length for a podcast, but there is a lot of data on what shows actually do, and some reliable principles for choosing your own. Here is what recent studies of tens of thousands of podcasts found, how it varies by genre, and a practical way to decide.

The short answer: the typical podcast episode runs about 35 to 37 minutes, and half of all shows sit between roughly 20 and 55 minutes. Make your episode as long as its content stays interesting, keep the length predictable from week to week, and if you have no idea where to start, aim for 20 to 40 minutes.

What the data says

Three independent analyses of podcast RSS feeds, years apart, land in nearly the same place:

StudySampleTypical length
CastFox Research, October 2026211,677 episodes from 58,886 shows, published January–September 2026Median show: 35 minutes; middle half of shows 18–56 minutes; mean 43 minutes
WhichPodcast, November 202637,987 shows (14.5 million episodes)Median show: 37 minutes; middle half 22–55 minutes; mean 43 minutes
Pacific Content, 2018More than 10 million episodesMedian episode: 38 min 42 s; mean 43 min 24 s

Two things stand out. First, the median has barely moved in a decade: WhichPodcast’s data puts the median show at 37 minutes in 2006 and 38 in 2025. Second, the average is always higher than the median, because a minority of very long shows (two- and three-hour conversations) pull it up.

Popular shows run longer. Pacific Content found the median episode among the top 400 shows on Apple Podcasts in the US was about 47 and a half minutes, nine minutes longer than podcasts overall. That is partly because established shows have audiences who have chosen to spend an hour with them, which a brand-new show hasn’t earned yet.

How lengths are spread out

Share of shows by their typical episode length (CastFox Research, 2026, 58,886 shows):

Under 15 minutes21.5%
15–30 minutes21.2%
30–45 minutes20.3%
45–60 minutes16.1%
60–90 minutes13.3%
90 minutes or more7.7%

So 43% of shows run under half an hour and about 21% run an hour or more. Short shows are not unusual, and long shows are not the norm.

Podcast length by genre

Genre matters more than anything else. Median episode length by a show’s main Apple Podcasts category, with the range covering the middle half of shows (CastFox Research, 2026):

TV & Film58.5 min(37–83)
Music58 min(29–73)
Leisure (incl. games)53.4 min(30–78)
Comedy50.8 min(30–70)
Sports47.4 min(29–66)
Arts43.2 min(22–73)
True Crime40.9 min(25–57)
History39.6 min(18–72)
Society & Culture35.6 min(18–57)
Religion & Spirituality34 min(20–47)
Science33.4 min(16–54)
Fiction30.9 min(24–79)
Technology30.1 min(14–51)
Health & Fitness29.6 min(16–49)
Business29 min(16–44)
News26.8 min(10–51)
Education24.6 min(12–43)
Kids & Family24.2 min(11–43)

Entertainment and conversation shows (film, music, games, comedy, sport) run close to an hour. Information shows (news, education, business, health) run closer to 25–30 minutes. WhichPodcast’s separate sample shows the same pattern, with gaming at the top (69 minutes) and news at the bottom (23).

How to choose the length of your podcast

  1. Start with the content, not a number. Ask how long it takes to deliver the episode’s promise well. Then cut anything that doesn’t serve it. A tight 22 minutes beats a padded 45.
  2. Think about when people listen. Commutes, workouts, dog walks and chores are 20 to 60 minute activities. A daily news show fits a coffee; a weekly deep-dive fits a long drive.
  3. Look at the shows your listeners already like in your niche. You don’t have to match them, but you should know what they expect.
  4. Consider your production time. Every finished minute takes several minutes to edit. A shorter show you can publish every week beats a long one that slips to monthly.
  5. Be consistent. Listeners build habits around a show. Varying by ten minutes either way is fine; swinging between 15 minutes and two hours is not.
  6. Let the data decide later. After ten episodes, check where listeners drop off. Apple Podcasts Connect and Spotify for Creators both show how much of an episode people play.

Questions people ask

Is a 10-minute podcast too short?

No. About one in five shows averages under 15 minutes. Short shows work when they deliver one clear thing, such as a news briefing, a daily tip or a short story.

Are long podcasts bad?

Not if the content earns it. Long shows succeed when listeners have a strong relationship with the hosts. For a new show with no audience yet, shorter is the safer bet.

Does episode length affect file size or hosting costs?

Yes. A 60-minute episode at 64 kbps is about 29 MB. Use our podcast file size calculator to check size and bandwidth, and see podcast hosting for plan limits.

How long should a podcast intro be?

Under a minute, ideally 15 to 45 seconds before the content starts. See the podcast intro script template.
